Despite the difficulty, expense and ecological dangers of current production methods, hydrogen gas represents a $100 billion market—and that is just the beginning. The major automotive, alternative energy and even oil companies are scrambling to develop and exploit hydrogen fuel cells to power everything from car engines to the industrial economy. The potential of delivering pure hydrogen safely and effectively represents the most significant energy opportunity since the discovery of oil. The size of the potential hydrogen energy market is virtually unlimited.

Amazonica’s system for producing 99.999% pure hydrogen—wherever and whenever it is needed—is a technological breakthrough. This low cost, environmentally friendly fuel source could transform the industrial economies and the developing world.

AMZZ Products and Services
Hydrogen is the simplest, most prolific, and lightest element in the universe. Hydrogen is not normally available in a gaseous state in our environment, since it readily combines with oxygen to form water, or with carbon to form fossil fuels such as crude oil, natural gas, or coal. Hydrogen has a number of uses, including in the manufacture of ammonia, but it is its potential as a fuel that is attracting significant interest and investment. It has been possible to construct or convert internal combustion engines to run on hydrogen for some time, but safety and storage concerns prevented any wide scale use. Recent advances in technology, particularly in fuel cells, allied to the environmental concerns from burning fossil fuels, have caused a re-evaluation of hydrogen as a power source.

The most common methods of producing hydrogen at the moment are by stripping the carbon atoms out of compressed natural gas using steam (known as "cracking") or the electrolysis of water. Both these processes are expensive, energy intensive and in the case of cracking, produces waste carbon. Commercial production of clean, cheap hydrogen is therefore a key requirement for large scale fuel cell usage.

$100 Billion is the ground floor of the hydrogen market

The existing commercial market for hydrogen gas is estimated to be $100 billion. Hydrogen produced by today’s technology—steam reforming natural gas— is expensive and generates too much carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas associated with global warming. An inexpensive, green hydrogen production source can rapidly expand the market.

Manufacturing

Ammonia is one of the most widely produced chemicals on earth. In 2010, the world produced more than 130 million tons of ammonia. China, India, Russia and the USA produce more than half of the world’s supply each year. The vast majority of ammonia is used as an agricultural fertilizer.

Hydrogen is essential to ammonia production. Although process technology has improved over the years, the basic chemistry is identical to the catalytic reaction of nitrogen and hydrogen process developed by Haber and Bosch in the early 20th century. To increase efficiency, large-scale ammonia manufacturers produce hydrogen on site, by steam reforming natural gas or another hydrocarbon fuel.

Every organization engaged in ammonia production would be an ideal customer for Amazonica’s technology. It would reduce the cost and complexity of ammonia production significantly.

Hydrogen fuel cells convert hydrogen’s chemical energy into electricity by causing it to react with oxygen. This zero-harmful emission power source has captivated the imagination of major automobile manufacturers. As of 2014, Chevrolet, Honda, Hyundai, and Mercedes Benz have prototype fleets on the road, while Toyota has targeted 2015 to offer a hydrogen fuel cell-powered car for sale to the public. In addition to powering automobiles—which will likely be the single largest market—fuel cells are expected to be used in consumer electronics and electricity plants.

Hydrogen fuel cells will transform the energy market, and governments around the world are investing heavily in fuel cell research and development. According to a US Department of Energy report from October 2013, shipments of fuel cells increased 34 percent over 2011 and a whopping 321 percent over 2008.
