The Geological Characteristics and Prospecting Direction of Gold Deposits of Northern Xixia—Southern Penglai in Shandong Province

The area from Northern Xixia to Southern Penglai is the most significant Gold Mine area of the Xixia-Penglai Metallogenic Belt. Almost 80% of gold reserves in such belt are located in this area. Northern Xixia-Southern Penglai has become the newly exploration focus along with the present of General Geological Survey Report on Houdaxue large gold mines in 1996. Currently, More than ten professional geological teams are engaging on gold exploration in this area.

After years of field geological work and the study of certain typical gold deposits, it is believed that Northern Xixia-Southern Penglai area has a superior geological condition of mineralization and broad perspective for prospecting.

1. Regional Geology Condition

Northern Xixa-Southern Penglai area is a part of Jiaobei Uplift (belongs to Ludong Uplift Area), is located on the north wing of Xixia anticlinorium, the east of Yishu deep faults. The whole area approximately covers an area of 300 km²: from Chaoshui-Zhuangguan-Houdaxue southward to Xiaaikou-Aishantang-Zhaili, Cunliji fault eastward to Daliuxing-Huluxian.

The Jiaodong Group, Penglai Group and The Mesozoic Cretaceous Strata sporadically outcropped in this area, accounting for 10% of its total coverage. The magmatism activity was strong in this area, meanwhile there’s a large area distribution with Guojialing granodiorite of late Yanshanian. This area is characterized by faulted structures of varied nature, which directly dominate the production of gold mine’s in the area.

2. Geological Characteristics of the deposits

Gold deposits such as Heilangou, Qigou, Sujakou, Guojiadian, Houdaxue, Chelizhangjia, Aishantang, Qianggou, Longhuitou etc. have been found in sequence. All of these gold deposits share the similar geological characteristics.

2.1 The occurrence & physical characteristics of ore body

Ore bodies are produced from NE-NNE fault structure. The deposits’ type is Jiaojia-pattern. The alteration zone consists of beresite, sericite-quartz, quartz vein, lamprophyre and granitic altered cataclastite. Beresite and quartz vein are the major source of industrial ore body. The range of ore body’s thickness is from several centimeters to dozens of centimeters and the thickest ore body can be 4~6 meters. The shape of ore body is occurred as vein, thin-plated, lenses and podiform (or string of beads) and is strictly controlled by the structure, varies with the change of structure. Ore bodies’ dip direction is SE and dip angle is 45°~ 85°. The average dip angle of ore bodies in Qigou gold deposit is 45°; The average dip angle of ore bodies in Heilangou gold deposit is 60°; The average dip angle of ore bodies in Guojiadian gold deposit is 72°; The dip angle of ore bodies in Chelizhangjia and Aishantang can be 85°even upright. Above-mentioned characteristics would depend on the structure and features of ore deposit.

Generally, ore bodies follow the rule of lateral trending. For instance, No.I-1 ore body of Guojiadian gold deposit, towards NE55°lateral trending and its pitch is 45°. On the other side, ore body of Heilangou gold deposit towards SSW lateral trending.

2.2 Ore Character

Beresite is the major ore in this area. Sericite-quartz alteration zone contains quartz stringer or quartz stockwork and its w(Au) grade is n×10-6 ~ nnn×10-6. The w(Au) grade of quartz stringer or quartz stockwork can be nnnn×10-6. Large particles of visible gold in plate-form, dentritic-form, granular-form and other irregular shape can be seen in the quartz vein.

Ore minerals mainly include pyrite, galena, cooper pyrite, blende, native gold, electrum etc. And gangue minerals mainly include quartz, calcite, muscovite etc.

Electrum is the main part of gold mineral while the native gold is secondary. Under reflecting microscope (20×10), the color of reflection is pale yellow-yellow and the reflectivity R=50%~70%. The majority of native gold is inclusion gold which is developed from pyrite. Most of electrum appears as fissure-filled gold and intercrystalline gold and it has a symbiotic relationship with pyrite, quartz, Pyr, copper pyrite and cubanite. A tiny part of electrum appears as inclusion gold in the pyrite. The purity of gold is between 600~980.

2.3 Wall Rock Alteration

The wall rock that is close to ore body was subject to the hydrothermal replacement of varied dgrees. The character, strength and type of wall rock alteration vary along with the change of ore structure. Beresitization is the most pressing example in which case the ore body would often directly turned into wall rock alteration; or occasionally gold ore body when mineralization and silicification of pyrite is stronger than usual. On the other side, sericite rock-oriented is also common. Potassic alteration can be an important wall rock alteration for gold deposit that developed in Guojialing rocks. The wall rock alteration caused by host structure of shear faults structure and ductile structure is stronger. This feature can be seen in the belt and symmetrical distribution from the ore body to the two sides of it. The wall rock alternation formed by tensing and fragile structures is less severe and few sericite rock-oriented can only be seen at both sides of the quartz deposit. Therefore, the gold deposits’ alteration developed in the contact belt of Guojialing rocks is severe and alteration developed inside the rocks is less severe.

3. Ore-controlling Condition & Metallogenetic Regularity

The mineralization process in this area has certain connection with the metamorphic strata, magma and fault structure of Jiaodong Group. The gold deposit is regarded as filling-metasomatic type, genetically belonging to low & medium temperature hydrothermal deposit.

3.1 Internal and External Contact Zone of Guojialing Rock Mass Controlling of Gold Deposit

At present, the vast majority of gold deposit that are found in this area distribute in the internal and external contact zone of Gipjialing rock mass, including Houdaxue, Qigou, Heilangou, Longhuitou, Guojiadian and other gold deposit (as is shown on figure 1). The internal contact zone seems like porphyyritic granodiorite and external contact zone is magnetic rock mass (gneissic biotite granite), Jiaodong group strata or Cretaceous strata. Between internal and external zone exists the following relation: the metasomatism of granite result in intrusive contact and faulted contact. Regionally contact relations between above rock types are transitional. The Guojialing rock mass is formed by the intrusive rock of semi- parautochthonous mixed melting.

Tectonic activity is highly frequent around the contact zone. The fault structure and magma intrusion has formed massive vein rock, which provides the space for ore accumulation and mineral source. All factors above-mentioned make the contact zone the most convenient place for mineralization.

3.2 Fault Structure Controlling of Ore Body

The gold deposit of northern Xixia-southern Penglai is controlled by the following deep fault structure: NE-NNE oriented fault of Shewobo-Xiaogujia, Shagou and Cunliji; NW oriented fault of Xiamenjia, Shipeng; EW oriented fault of Xilin.

The NE-NEE oriented fault structure is seen as gold deposits’ direct factor of orientation. Gold deposits in this area has a character of Regional distribution-intensive and spotted in group, such character is just under control of NE-NEE oriented fault structure. Moreover, it’s an advantage to produce rich gold deposit at the changing or turning part of the fault structure.

Most of host structures in major ore body are compress & shear faults and some branch veins is produced in brittle or tensional fault that is derived from host structure. Multiple parts of ore body are located at the crossing point between NW oriented structure and NE oriented structure. NW oriented structure was formed earlier (before the mineralization process), playing a block part in the process of deposit formation, and continued its activities after the formation. For instance, No.I-1 ore body of Aishantang gold deposit was just staggered by NW oriented fault, displaced about 30~40m of horizontal distance.

3.3 Guojialing Rock Mass Controlling of Gold Deposit

Guojialing rock mass is semi-in-situ type of mixed melting metasomatic intrusive granite that was formed in the process of contamination and granitization of Jiaodong group strata, along with magmatism. Besides, Jiaodong group strata were formed by the regional metamorphism of clastic sedimentary rock that came out from submarine volcanic eruption. The abundance value of Jiaodong group strata w(Au) is 24.03×10-9. After the formation of Guojialing granodiorite, the abundance value w(Au) is 1.18 ×10-9. Through the process of excitation, migration and concentration, the gold ore bodies separated from granodiorite would form the gold deposit in favorable places.

In the process of gold mineralization, Guojialing rock mass provide both the metallogenic material and metallogenic power. And the rock mass itself also act as the main wall rock. Therefore, The Guojialing rock mass controlling effects on gold deposit is very obvious.

4. Prospecting Indicator & Prospecting Direction

4.1 Prospecting Indicator

(1) Silky mica-quartzite zone and altered pyritization rocks filled in NE-NNE oriented fault structure is the direct prospecting indicator for gold deposit.

(2) Basic or mid-acidic vein rock can be seen as the indirect prospecting indicator, which is closely associated with gold distribution.

(3) Abnormality of primary halos in Au, Ag, Cu, Pb, As, Sb, Hg, etc. is a good geochemical prospecting indicator.

(4) Abnormality of geophysics: there exists obvious abnormality of geophysics like high chargeability and high magnetic susceptibility. Such abnormalities are usually caused by mineral.

4.2 Prospecting Direction

Northern Xixia-Southern Penglai area has a superior geological condition of mineralization and broad perspective for prospecting. According to the metallogenetic regularity mentioned before and field scouting results, the following things should be addressed.

4.2.1 Internal and External Contact Zones of Guojialing Rock Mass

Gold deposits are obviously controlled by contact zones in this area. Studying on contact zones, especially the NE-NNE oriented fault structure in contact zone should be the focus when prospecting gold deposit. The following section should draw much attention:

(1) Dongyijia—Weikuang—Xishipeng—Xiaoyangjia—Huaishuzhuang area
(2) Daqijiazhuang—Yanzikuang—Daliuhang—Xigouliujia area
(3) Shangaikou—Xiaaikou—Shijia—Xinwangji area

4.2.2 Internal Fault Zone of Guojialing Rock Mass

A number of gold deposits have been found at the internal fault zone, including Chelizhangjia, Guojiadian, Qianggou and other gold deposits, Luanjiagou, Beiluotang, Dazhaojia and other gold mine spots. The following areas should be seen as main prospecting area:

(1) Beiluotang—Wanggezhuang—Denggezhuang area
(2) Luanjiagou—Shagou—Tianjiazhuang—Housijia area

4.2.3 Deep Prospecting

There still exists rich ore body 700-800 meters under the surface of Zhaoyuan and Laizhou area. Besides, drilling for deep control has not been proceeded at some small gold deposits like Chelizhangjia, Aishantang, Longhuitou. Such deposits still have broad perspectives for deep prospecting.

In addition, systematic evaluation and geophysical exploration have not been applied on quite a few gold deposits so far. Minerals’ extending haven’t been under control completely, the entire ore body has not been enclosed. There are still broad perspectives for deep prospecting.

In conclusion, because of its superior geological condition of mineralization and broad perspective for prospecting, Norther Xixa—Southern Penglai area should be the focus for prospecting in the coming time.
